Church and Monarchy under the same cross: A pastoral visit to the diocese of Segovia in the years of 1446 and 1447

Abstract

This article deals with the study of Segovian parochial churches in the first half of the 15th century through the historical evidence of a pastoral visit document. This document describes the conservation state of the churches, the conduct of the parish priests and the peasants' opinions about all this. It is also analyzed the role of the visitor, who appears as a carrier of the ideology of the church as an institution but also influenced by the logic of the peasant community, where he generally comes from. This pastoral visit takes place in the background of the 14th century Church Reform that tried to revert the crisis of the Church
